Paradigm Shift - looking for similar projects in reporting paradigm shifts

I think this shift from centralized to distributed data is hard to envision for day-to-day reporting needs. Are there similar shifts that have taken place for other services/projects/processes/institutions that can provide some analogies for us? It would be useful to see concretely how reporting across microservices could work.
